The ice skaters

Spectacular sixth-plate ambrotype of two cool ice skaters posed with their skates.  While we’ve had some tintypes with skaters in the past this is the first ambrotype we’ve ever offered.  Buddies for sure and possibly a father and son, we immediately notice a closeness and bond between these two.  There is a modern id behind the image that would suggest pals since it reads William Gray Staples.  We feel if it was father and son both names would be present.   Each man has their own sense of style even while wearing very similar double breasted heavy overcoats, gloves and great hats.  The ice skates are simply fantastic and we are sure an early skate collector would love this image too.  The plate is very good plus condition with great tones and contrast.  A few mat marks as seen and the black backing does have some crackle lines when examining under light and at an angle.  This could easily be remedied if so desired but we like it in its original state and we have added a black archival paper for some additional darkness.  It is housed in a full worn case.  Don’t’ miss out on this one -it will complement any collection!   $650
